A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson
by Mary Rowlandson
When King Philip's War reached Lancaster, Massachusetts in February 1675/76, Mary Rowlandson, a minister's wife, was carried off with her children; her six-year-old daughter died of her wounds about a week into captivity. Through some eleven weeks and a series of forced marches she called "removes," she read constantly from a Bible she was given, framing her ordeal through Puritan providential faith as God's chastening and deliverance. Ransomed for twenty pounds, she wrote the first and most influential of the American captivity narratives.
The changed life
Stripped of home, child, and safety, Rowlandson read her suffering as the hand of a faithful God — and her steadfast scripture-soaked faith became a testimony to all who read it.
