The History of Mary Prince, a West Indian Slave, Related by Herself
by Mary Prince
Born into slavery in Bermuda around 1788, Mary Prince was enslaved in Bermuda, the Turks Islands, and Antigua before being brought to England, where she left her master. Her account, taken down from her own words, exposed the brutality of West Indian slavery to British readers.
The changed life
Taught to read by Moravian missionaries in Antigua, Prince embraced the Moravian faith and was baptized, and her Christian conviction sustained her through bondage and her fight for freedom.
