The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Written by Himself
by Olaudah Equiano
Equiano, also known as Gustavus Vassa, recounts his birth in the Igbo region of West Africa, his kidnapping into slavery, the Middle Passage, and years of bondage before he purchased his own freedom in 1766. The book became one of the most influential antislavery texts of its age.
The changed life
Converted to evangelical Protestant Christianity, Equiano bound his new faith to the abolitionist cause, devoting his freedom to preaching against the slave trade.
