The Passion of Saints Perpetua and Felicity
by Vibia Perpetua
The central section of this ancient martyr-account is a first-person prison diary by Vibia Perpetua, a young noblewoman of Carthage — among the earliest surviving texts written by a Christian woman in her own voice. Imprisoned while still nursing her infant son around 203 AD, she records her visions, her confrontations with her pagan father, and her steady refusal to recant. An anonymous eyewitness frames and completes the narrative through to the martyrs' death in the amphitheater. (Survives in both Latin and Greek; which is original remains debated.)
The changed life
In the squalor of a Roman prison, a new mother chose Christ over family, freedom, and her own child — and her jailer Pudens was won over and converted during their captivity.
