A Son of the Forest
by William Apess
William Apess (1798-1839), a Pequot, tells the story of his hard early years, his Methodist conversion, and his calling to preach. Widely regarded as the first full-length autobiography written and published by a Native American, it traces a spiritual journey while answering the prejudice of the age.
The changed life
Apess was baptized in December 1818, drawn to the Methodists, and ordained a minister in 1829 — the same year this account appeared. The book turns on that conversion: a man who finds in the gospel both a Savior and a standing equal to any other.
