Autobiography of a Fugitive Negro
by Samuel Ringgold Ward
Samuel Ringgold Ward, born enslaved on Maryland's Eastern Shore in 1817, escaped with his parents to New Jersey as a child and became a Congregational minister and leading antislavery lecturer and editor. His book recounts his ministry and abolitionist labors in the United States, Canada, and England.
The changed life
Ward records his religious conversion in 1833, his licensing to preach in 1839, and his ordination as a Congregational pastor in 1841, administering baptism and the Lord's Supper.
