The Autobiography of Madame Guyon

by Madame Guyon

The spiritual autobiography of Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de La Motte Guyon (1648-1717), a French mystic and lay teacher of contemplative prayer associated with the controversial movement of Quietism. Much of it was composed during her years of captivity.

The changed life

Married at fifteen into an unhappy union, Guyon lived as a young noblewoman until her husband's death in 1676, after which she devoted herself wholly to mystical prayer and itinerant teaching. Condemned for Quietism, she was imprisoned, including in the Bastille, and spent her final years in seclusion writing religious verse.
