Autobiography, Sermons, Addresses, and Essays of Bishop L. H. Holsey
by L. H. Holsey
Lucius Henry Holsey (1842-1920) was born enslaved in Hancock County, Georgia, his enslaver also his father. After emancipation he became a bishop in the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church and championed Paine Institute to train Black clergy; this volume gathers his autobiography, sermons, and essays.
The changed life
Holsey recounts a change of heart and his joining the Methodist church in 1858, his ordination as deacon in 1869, and his election as bishop in 1873, with sermons expounding Christian doctrine.
