James Lindsay Smith, born enslaved around 1816 in the Northern Neck of Virginia and lamed by a childhood injury, learned shoemaking, escaped North in 1838, and built a shoe business in Norwich, Connecticut. His autobiography also gathers reminiscences of slavery, the war, and the education of freedpeople.
The changed life
Converted at eighteen, Smith was licensed to preach as a Methodist, opened a Sabbath school, and preached at his Norwich church for some twenty years.
