Autobiography of Nicholas Said

by Nicholas Said

Nicholas Said, born Mohammed Ali ben Said around 1836 in Kukawa in the Bornu Empire, was captured into the trans-Saharan slave trade and served enslavers across the Ottoman world, Russia, and Europe before traveling freely, immigrating to America, and serving in the Union Army. His memoir traces this extraordinary journey.

The changed life

Raised Muslim, Said converted to Christianity and was baptized into the Orthodox Church in Riga in 1855, and his memoir reflects on that turning of faith.
