History of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan
by Andrew J. Blackbird
Less a conversion narrative than a history, this 1887 work by Andrew J. Blackbird (Odawa; his Odawa name Mack-e-te-be-nessy, "Blackbird") records the history of the Ottawa and Chippewa peoples of Michigan, a grammar of their language, and the author's own family history.
The changed life
Blackbird (c. 1815-1908), an Odawa leader from the L'Arbre Croche country, wrote as a Christian man preserving his people's story; his account of his own life and family runs through a book meant to keep that heritage from being lost.
