The Journal of George Fox
by George Fox
First published in 1694, edited by Thomas Ellwood with a preface by William Penn, the Journal records the life and ministry of George Fox (1624-1691), founder of the Religious Society of Friends. It is a classic of religious autobiography, often compared with Augustine's Confessions and Bunyan's Grace Abounding.
The changed life
Fox began as an apprentice shoemaker and dealer in wool and leather who grew dissatisfied with conventional religion. After a spiritual crisis and a revelation of the Inner Light, Christ accessible directly to every person, he became an itinerant preacher and the founder of the Quaker movement.
