The History of the Life of Thomas Ellwood, Written by His Own Hand
by Thomas Ellwood
Published in London in 1714 with a supplement by Joseph Wyeth, this autobiography by Thomas Ellwood (1639-1713) recounts the early days of the Quaker movement and the persecution of its members. Ellwood is also remembered as Latin reader to the blind poet John Milton and as the editor of George Fox's Journal.
The changed life
Ellwood was the son of an Oxfordshire squire, raised in the Anglican gentry. After visiting Isaac Penington's household at Chalfont St. Peter he was convinced and became a committed Quaker, enduring imprisonment and estrangement from his family for his new faith.
