Elijah P. Marrs (1840-1910), born into bondage in Shelby County, Kentucky, enlisted in the Union Army in 1864 after recruiting twenty-seven other Black men to join, serving in the 12th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery. His memoir spans slavery, soldiering, and ministry.
The changed life
Converted around 1851 after a Methodist class meeting, Marrs became a Baptist minister and the first pastor of Beargrass Baptist Church, and co-founded a normal and theological institute in Kentucky.
