The Life of John Thompson, a Fugitive Slave

by John Thompson

John Thompson, born in Maryland in 1812, was enslaved for roughly twenty-five years across several plantations before escaping to the North and settling in Worcester, Massachusetts. His narrative also recounts a whaling voyage after his escape.

The changed life

Methodist Christianity runs throughout the book, from prayer meetings held under violent suppression to the divine providence Thompson credits with sustaining his escape to freedom.
