An Account of the Life of Silas Told, Written by Himself
by Silas Told
Silas Told (born 1711), of Bristol, was apprenticed to the sea at fourteen and sailed on transatlantic slave-trading voyages before converting to Methodism under John Wesley's influence. His memoir was published by Methodist friends partly to expose the cruelties of the slave trade.
The changed life
Told went from a sailor on slave ships, hardened by mistreatment and the violence of the trade, to a devoted Methodist. He became a visitor to condemned prisoners at London's Newgate Prison, ministering to the marginalized.
