A Narrative of the Lord's Wonderful Dealings with John Marrant, a Black

John Marrant, told by John Marrant

Taken down from his own relation and published in London in 1785, this short narrative tells the life of John Marrant, a free-born Black man who underwent a dramatic conversion as a youth after hearing the evangelist George Whitefield preach. By his own account he then lived among the Cherokee, was seized and condemned to death but spared, learned the language, and saw the conversion of the Cherokee "king" and his daughter. (Scholars regard the Cherokee episode as embellished; it is best read as his own account.) He was ordained a minister in 1785 and sailed to preach among Black settlers in Nova Scotia.

The changed life

A careless youth struck down under Whitefield's preaching became a condemned captive who, by his telling, witnessed Christ to the very people about to execute him — then gave his life to itinerant ministry.
