Henry Bibb, born enslaved in Kentucky, made repeated escape attempts, was recaptured and sold to owners in the Deep South, and at last escaped to Canada, where he became an abolitionist lecturer and editor. His narrative documents these ordeals in detail.
The changed life
Bibb describes serious religious impressions from 1833 and made faith central to his marriage covenant, sharply distinguishing the slaveholders' pro-slavery preaching he rejected from authentic Christianity.
