The Narrative of Lunsford Lane
by Lunsford Lane
Born enslaved in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1803, Lunsford Lane built a tobacco business by night and purchased his own freedom in 1835, then labored to redeem his wife and children. Expelled from the state under anti-free-Black laws and assaulted by a mob, he fundraised in the North and secured his family's freedom.
The changed life
Baptized and instructed in the faith while still enslaved, Lane read his liberation as the work of divine providence and carried that conviction into his fight to free his family.
