A Narrative of the Life of Rev. Noah Davis, A Colored Man
by Noah Davis
Noah Davis, born enslaved in Madison County, Virginia, around 1803, apprenticed as a shoemaker and gradually purchased freedom for himself and his family. Written when he was fifty-four, his narrative recounts his ministry in Baltimore.
The changed life
Davis recounts his Christian conversion and call to preach, becoming a Baptist minister who founded a church and a school, and closing his book with a sermon on the duty to provide for one's own.
