Narrative of William W. Brown, a Fugitive Slave

by William Wells Brown

William Wells Brown (1814?-1884), born enslaved near Lexington, Kentucky, escaped to freedom and became a leading abolitionist lecturer and writer, later the first published African American novelist. His narrative recounts the cruelties of slavery, family separation, and his escape.

The changed life

Free at last, Brown devoted his life and pen to the antislavery cause, lecturing widely and writing to expose the realities of bondage he had survived.
