Born in Old Calabar in 1773 and kidnapped into slavery as a small child, John Jea was enslaved in New York before gaining his freedom. His narrative traces his bondage, conversion, and travels as an itinerant preacher.
The changed life
Jea converted to evangelical Methodist Christianity and claimed God miraculously taught him to read the Scriptures, after which he became "the African Preacher," gathering a congregation and evangelizing across continents.
