Affiliate Disclosure

The short version: some links to books we don’t sell earn us a small commission, and that has never decided what appears on this site. The long version is below, because you deserve to know exactly how a site that recommends books pays for itself.

The two kinds of book here

Most of the library is public domain. Those are our own editions — we typeset them, we sell them for a couple of dollars, and every one of those pages also links to a free copy of the same text so you can skip paying us entirely. No affiliate link is involved anywhere in that.

A smaller number of books are still in print and still in copyright. We can’t publish those, and we wouldn’t want to — the author and publisher should be paid. But some of them are among the best books on this subject written, and a library that pretended otherwise would be less useful to you. So we write about them and send you to a shop that sells them.

What we earn

Nothing, at present. We are not currently in any affiliate programme and no link on this site earns us a commission. This page is published in advance so that the moment that changes, the disclosure is already here rather than added quietly afterwards. When it does change, this page will name the retailers involved.

What it does not buy

Commissions play no part in which books are listed, what order they appear in, what we say about them, or whether we recommend them at all. We have recommended books that earn us nothing and left out books that would have. Where we think a book is weak, or wrong, or not worth your money, we say so — a recommendation you can’t trust is worth less to us than the commission is.

We also don’t accept payment from publishers or authors for coverage, and we don’t publish sponsored posts. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on the page itself, not here.

Who writes the reviews

A person does. As set out on our About page, AI is used to build and maintain this site, and to translate public-domain texts that have never had an English edition — but never to write the words you read. Every opinion about a book here was formed by someone who read it.

Prices and availability

We don’t quote prices for in-print books, because they change and a stale price is worse than none. Whatever the retailer shows you when you arrive is the real one.

Tracking

Outbound affiliate links may let the retailer set a cookie to attribute a purchase to us. That happens on their site, under their privacy policy, and only if you click. Our own data practices are in our Privacy Policy.
