The Autobiography of John B. Gough

by John B. Gough

John Bartholomew Gough emigrated from England as a boy, lost his mother to poverty, and sank into years of helpless drunkenness as a wandering actor and bookbinder in America. In 1842 a stranger's kind hand led him to sign the temperance pledge; he stumbled, fell, and rose again, and went on to become the most famous temperance orator of the nineteenth century, lecturing on both sides of the Atlantic. Written in his own vivid voice, this autobiography lays bare both the squalor of the drunkard's life and the long, unglamorous climb back out of it.

The changed life

From wandering, friendless drunkard to the age's most celebrated temperance lecturer, who pleaded with crowds for forty years.
