Confessio (The Confession of St. Patrick)
by Patrick of Ireland
One of only two Latin works scholars accept as genuinely St. Patrick's own, the Confessio is his short, urgent spiritual autobiography. Seized from his family's home in Roman Britain by Irish raiders at about sixteen and held as a herdsman in Ireland for roughly six years, he writes that this captivity deepened the faith he had neglected — before he escaped and made his way home. He later returned to the land of his bondage as a missionary, and here describes baptizing converts and ordaining priests. (Written in Latin; the date c. 450 is approximate and debated.)
The changed life
A nominal Christian boy, enslaved among strangers, turned to God in his loneliness on the Irish hills — then chose to go back to his captors' country as their apostle.
