Confessions
by Augustine
Written in Latin around AD 397-400 in thirteen books, Augustine's Confessions recounts his sinful youth, his years among the Manichaeans, and his conversion to Christianity. It is widely regarded as the earliest and most influential spiritual autobiography in Western literature.
The changed life
Augustine was an ambitious teacher of rhetoric who chased worldly success and followed the Manichaean sect for some nine years. Under the influence of Bishop Ambrose at Milan he converted in 386, was baptized in 387, and became a priest and then Bishop of Hippo.
